India’s national hockey team just won its first World Cup in 24 years. This victory is a huge moment for the country, but it’s especially impressive considering the controversy that has surrounded this team ever since a certain Bollywood film came out in 2007. It seems as if the film “Chak De India,” which translates to “Score India” or “Go For Goal India,” has actually brought more dishonor to Indian hockey than what was seen on screen. In order to keep pressure up and viewership up (an unfortunate side effect of Bollywood films), filmmakers needed an unskilled antagonist team that stood no chance of winning against them. This justifies the sport drama and keeps viewers hooked. For “Chak De India,” the filmmakers chose to make its story line revolve around India’s national hockey team. The film shows an untalented Dutch hockey team that must be defeated in order to qualify for the Olympics. Even though Indian hockey seemed like an easy target (India has never won a gold medal), it actually wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Luckily, our director Rajkumar Hirani is significantly less talented than his Dutch counterparts, because otherwise this scene would not be convincing to anyone but innocent children. The director makes this message more poignant by having the Indian team play in an artificial arena, with fake grass. This scene will make you happy that you are in India. Predictably, the Dutch win in due time with amazing precision. However, when the film focuses on the aftermath of this victory, it shows us a different side of Indian hockey. Before everything was routine and boring for them, there were few instances of true grit in which players risked their lives to score a goal. This moment made me burst into tears because I want India to be successful at hockey, too! It showed me an even deeper level of Indian grit which is really rare considering they are usually famous for their bhajans. The reason why this film is going to be a success in the same way “Slumdog Millionaire” was a success in 2008 is because of its premise. The European team plays under-sized and under-trained. The Indian team plays with glory, glory, glory! In other words, India plays with dignity and sportsmanship. This becomes apparent when the moment when the Indian team scores a goal where itself is responsible for their own triumph. When Indian teams play against each other they fight for victory because they want to prove that India can beat anyone on earth and that Indian hockey stars should not be criticized if they win. India is all about the pride, respect and the integrity to win. Hirani’s film shows us how team-work wins over selfishness. It shows players who are not only talented but are also well-rounded individuals who have the kind of emotional maturity needed to be captain of a team. There are many funny scenes in this movie where both hockey players and extras have very bizarre reactions to their victory. This made me laugh because it shows that Indian talent is not just restricted to one sport or one nation. cfa1e77820
